XL-F25 Embedded Scan Module for Livestock Ear Tag Tracing

One pig's record starts with an ear tag at birth and runs through vaccination, feeding, pre-slaughter inspection and cutting. Every step of that traceability chain is joined by a scan. The farm environment is nothing like an office: wet pens, airborne dust, unstable power. For handheld data collectors and weighing equipment to read codes reliably there, the deciding factor is the embedded scan engine inside. The XL-F25 embedded scan module pairs a 640x480 CMOS sensor with an in-house decode design to read printed and on-screen barcodes quickly and accurately, and it supports a customized wide-voltage input, which makes it a practical choice for livestock equipment integrators.

1. Why Choose the XL-F25

Scanning on a farm is difficult in three ways: the environment is dirty, the power supply is inconsistent, and the devices are small. Handheld terminals, herd-management tablets and weigh-scale displays all have limited internal space, and an external scanner is neither tidy nor robust. Embedding the scan engine in the device itself is the right answer.

The XL-F25 uses a 640x480 CMOS high-resolution sensor with in-house decode technology to read 1D and 2D barcodes quickly. Printed ear tags and labels are read, and so are QR codes shown on a phone screen. It also supports a customized wide-voltage input. Farm power grids fluctuate and equipment power supplies vary, so the module can be adapted to the supply it will actually see, avoiding the read failures and equipment damage that unstable voltage causes.

The compact footprint and flexible integration let OEMs embed it in their own equipment quickly and shorten the path to market.

2. Application Scenarios

1. Ear Tag Fitting and Traceability Registration

Piglets and calves are tagged at birth, with a barcode or 2D code carrying the animal's identity. A handheld terminal with the XL-F25 inside scans the tag at fitting and writes the record into the herd-management platform, so the animal can be traced from birth through pen transfers to market. During a disease investigation, one scan of the ear tag pulls up the full vaccination, medication and quarantine history for that individual, which locates risk quickly and supports origin inspection and movement control.

2. Vaccination and Veterinary Drug Records

Injection and deworming work is routine on a farm. The regulatory codes and traceability codes on drug and vaccine packaging have to be registered one by one, capturing product, batch, expiry date and the animals treated. With the XL-F25 inside, a vet scans the drug box and then the ear tag, two steps, and the record is generated automatically, with withdrawal periods and expired stock flagged clearly. That meets the veterinary drug traceability requirements farms are held to.

3. Feed and Drug Stock Movements

Feed bags, drug cases and vaccine cold-chain boxes in the store all carry barcodes. Fit the XL-F25 at the weighing platform or the storeroom door: an inbound scan matches batch and supplier, an outbound scan writes stock off, and a month-end walk-through with the reader reconciles book stock against physical stock. Purchasing plans then rest on data, expired material is easy to find, and warehouse control stops being guesswork.

4. Slaughter and Carcass Traceability

On the slaughter line, traceability information has to stay attached to the same animal from pre-slaughter inspection to cutting and packing. Fixed reading stations with the XL-F25 read carcass labels and carton codes on the line and work with weighing and label-printing equipment, so origin and destination are both recorded. If a quality problem appears, it can be traced back to the farm, the batch, or the individual animal.
