In a warehouse you move the scanner to the barcode. At a checkout it is the other way round: items keep sweeping past, and the same device has to read the payment and loyalty codes on the customer's phone at the same time. This article covers what actually matters when choosing a checkout scanning platform, and introduces our X6 desktop 2D scanning platform.
X6 desktop high-speed 2D scanning platform - 640x480 CMOS global shutter, 120 scans/sec
Half the codes are on a screen. Payment and loyalty codes live on phones: screen brightness varies, eye-comfort mode shifts the colour, tempered glass reflects, and getting too close produces moiré. Printed barcodes are a different problem - laminate glare, wrinkled packaging, curved bottle surfaces. One window has to read both reliably.
Speed converts directly into queue length. The line is already there. Half a second per item, compounded across a shift, is the customer's patience. "Scan it" has to become "sweep it past" - and that comes from hardware decode speed, not from software tuning.
Cashiers do not pose. Items are waved past at a different angle, distance and speed every single time. The field of view has to be wide and the depth of field forgiving, so nobody is hunting for the right spot.
Counter space is tight and noisy. There is rarely a free patch of counter, so the platform has to be angle-adjustable. Beep volume and LED brightness also have to suit the store - some are noise-sensitive, some have strong downlight on the counter.
The X6 is a 640x480 CMOS desktop 2D scanning platform. Its key trait is a global shutter: a barcode in motion is not skewed line-by-line, which is the hardware precondition for "sweep it past and it reads". Combined with 120 scans/sec, a normal checkout motion needs no pause. Printed and on-screen codes are read on the same window, with no mode switching.
Three interfaces - and USB-HID is the convenient one. The X6 offers USB-HID keyboard, USB virtual COM and RS232. This is the most practical point at a checkout: many POS terminals are locked systems where you cannot install drivers or change the application. In USB-HID mode the scanner simply acts as a keyboard - plug it in and it works.
1D-only mode at the touch of a button. With 2D decoding switched off, advertising codes, coupon codes and QR codes printed on packaging are ignored, so the cashier can concentrate on item barcodes - and switch 2D back on when a payment code needs reading. The platform angle is adjustable, four beep tones are selectable, and the unit measures 158x92x94 mm in an ABS+PC housing for high-frequency checkout work.
Item barcodes and payment codes arrive mixed, at high volume, from many sources. The priority is to keep the effective read zone generous so the cashier can sweep items past rather than placing each one on a spot.
Both medicine barcodes and on-screen insurance or e-prescription codes must be read. Medicine boxes are long and narrow with the barcode often on a side panel or fold, so angle the platform lower and aim the window at the side surface.
The scan position sits right next to the scale, leaving even less room. The adjustable angle makes the X6 easier to place here than a fixed platform; keep some distance from the metal scale body so reflections do not reach the read window.
No cashier corrects mistakes, so fault tolerance rests entirely on the hardware. Enable multi-code reading and the beeper so shoppers can tell whether the scan landed - and implement misread protection, filtering out advertising and coupon QR codes so the system never adds an item the customer did not scan.
| Item | Recommended practice |
|---|---|
| Interface choice | POS software editable → USB virtual COM; locked system → USB-HID keyboard; industrial PC → RS232 |
| Placement | Separate position from the customer payment-code reader; mount slightly below the cashier's eyeline to cut glare |
| Counter reflections | Avoid downlights aimed straight into the read window; add a matte pad on stainless counters |
| Misread protection | Switch 2D decoding off when payment codes are not being read, leaving 1D item barcodes only |
| Beep | Louder in noisy stores; a uniform tone across a chain makes staff training easier |
| Store / requirement | Recommended model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supermarket, convenience store (printed + on-screen codes) | X6 | Desktop platform, global shutter, 120 scans/sec, three interfaces |
| Handheld top-up scanning, shelf stocktaking | 1620 / BX20 | Wired 2D gun / wireless Bluetooth gun - better when moving around |
| Inside a POS terminal, very tight space | E600 / XL-F3-BW | Embedded scan modules that mount behind the front panel |
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Image sensor | 640x480 CMOS, global shutter |
| Scan rate | 120 scans/sec |
| Symbologies | 1D item barcodes + 2D (payment, loyalty and other on-screen codes) |
| Interfaces | USB-HID keyboard / USB virtual COM / RS232 |
| Feedback | 4 selectable beep tones + soft LED indicator; 2D decoding can be switched off |
| Construction | Angle-adjustable desktop mount, 158x92x94 mm, ABS+PC housing |
